Preparing a level building pad on a sloping block

Most blocks are not flat, and a house or shed needs a level, stable base. Turning a slope into a proper pad is a job in itself, and getting it right sets up everything that follows.

Cut and fill

The usual approach on a slope is to cut into the high side and use that material to build up the low side, creating a level platform. The trick is in the balance — a good cut-and-fill moves as little material off site as possible.

Compaction matters

The filled side has to be built up and compacted in layers. Fill that is just dumped and levelled will settle later, and you do not want a slab or shed settling unevenly. Layered, compacted fill stays put.

Drainage and batters

  • The pad is shaped to shed water away from the build, not towards it.
  • Cut and fill batters are set at a stable angle, or held with retaining where space is tight.
  • Topsoil is stripped and stockpiled to reuse on the finished surrounds.
